Copley Hospital Helps Make Quitting EasierFor Immediate Release09/29/2008
Why wait for New Year’s to quit smoking? You can make that healthy lifestyle change today. “Information is the key to helping smokers learn how to quit,” says Copley Hospital’s Community Wellness Manager, Linda Shaw, RN, CCE. “Quitting is easier if they understand the effects of smoking and why they smoke.” Shaw describes quitting as a process, “it’s not a one-time event when you put down your cigarettes for a day,” she says. In an effort to help community members successfully quit smoking Copley Hospital, in collaboration with the Vermont Department of Health’s ‘Vermont Quit Network’ program, is offering a four-week Tuesday evening class beginning October 14th. Classes are free and will be held at the hospital’s Wellness Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates:
October 14, 21, 28 and November 4.
The classes will discuss strategies and provide support. For example, did you know that a cigarette craving only lasts 5 minute? In “The Vermont Quick Network Program,” you’ll lean tips to help mange your ravings. “And all Vermonters who access the program receive free nicotine replacement therapy – patches, gum or lozenges,” continued Shaw. To register for the free four-week class at Copley call 888-8369.
Copley is also working with local businesses to provide on-site quit smoking classes for their employees. Local business owners interested in scheduling an on-site program should contact Linda Shaw as well.
The Vermont Quit Network program offers several ways to help Vermonters quit smoking. The program works with you and as your schedule allows and is available by phone, email or in person. For instance says Shaw, “The online support provides options including self-help tools and chat groups where you can talk with other smokers who know what you’re going through.” Calling the phone line, 1-800-Quit-Now (784-8669), links the caller to a quit coach who will help you get ready to quit and also provide tips, advice and support to help you continue you to not smoke.
