Mansfield Orthopaedics Introduces Custom-Fit Knee Replacement Surgery at Copley Hospital01/29/2009
Morrisville, VT – Knee-replacement surgery no longer has to be a “one-size-fits-all” procedure. Mansfield Orthopaedics has introduced two new minimally invasive procedures utilizing patient-specific, custom-designed knee implants. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Bryan Huber recently performed Vermont’s first surgeries using the ConforMIS iForma™ and the iDuo™ knee implants at Copley Hospital. The procedures use advance technology that converts cat scan (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data into personalized implants designed to conform to the unique structure of the patient’s joint. The advantage over traditional knee replacement options is that since the implant mirrors the surface contours of the knee, fewer cuts are needed, so more bone can be preserved. “Customizing the implants to a patient’s anatomy makes for a less traumatic procedure, which in turn reduces surgical and recovery times,” says Dr. Huber. “And since more bone and cartilage can be preserved with these new procedures, it increases the range of treatment options for patients.” At present, Dr. Huber of Mansfield Orthopaedics at Copley Hospital is the only practice in Vermont to offer the minimally invasive procedures.
The process begins with a patient’s diagnostic CT or MRI scan. The diagnostic scan provides information about the shape and condition of the knee. This data is then turned into a virtual 3D model of the patient’s knee. An implant is then designed that precisely matches the patient’s knee anatomy. Dr. Huber uses instruments guided by the same data to create surgical cutting and placement guides to help determine the exact placement of the implant. Excellent placement and alignment of an implant makes for a more natural, anatomic feel.
. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the most common reason for knee replacement surgery. Approximately 30% to 50% of patients who receive a total knee replacement today exhibit symptoms of osteoarthritis in just one or two of the three compartments of the knee. And traditionally, total knee replacement was the only option for a patient with bicompartmental disease. The iForma™ is considered best for patients with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis in either the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) compartment of the knee. The iDuo™ is designed for patients with arthritic damage to either the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) compartment of the knee plus the patellofemoral compartment located behind the kneecap. Patients with bicompartmental disease may use a personalized implant to preserve as much of the bone and cartilage as possible for future treatment options. Each option, be it a personalized or a standard implant, is determined on an individual basis, determining what is best for each patient’s specific condition.
