Future physicians are receiving valuable training from a clinical rotation program offered by Orthopedic Surgeons Bryan Huber, M.D. and Eric Mullins, M.D. of Mansfield Orthopaedics, a practice of Copley Hospital. For the past eight years, the practice has offered a Preceptorship Program with Fletcher Allen Health Care and the UVM School of Medicine, coordinated by Dr. Huber. The practice provides a similar program with the University of New England – Physician Assistant Program. This two-week Preceptorship Program provides fourth year medical students a practical clinical experience while shadowing at the Mansfield Orthopaedics practice and in the hospital’s operating room and medical surgical unit.
Schools of Medicine require their students to complete clinical rotations at community-based practices. Typical core rotations include primary care in pediatrics, family practice, internal medicine, OB/GYN and general surgery. Rotations can vary, providing students anywhere between two and four weeks of clinical experience. During that time the students are primarily observing, and to some extent providing patient care under direct supervision of their clinical mentor.
“It’s satisfying to give back, to help educate the next generation of physicians,” said Dr. Mullins. “I enjoy sharing my knowledge of musculoskeletal care and working with future physicians who are interested in learning more about orthopedics. Bryan is too; it’s just something we do.”
Dr. Mullins said there is an additional requirement Mansfield Orthopaedics expects of its students and that is to research an orthopedic-related topic and present it to the practice. For example, a student who was interviewing for a pediatric residency did her presentation on the various orthopedic procedures typically used with pediatric patients.
Mansfield Orthopaedics provides this service year round, working with 5-6 students annually. Medical students must indicate their interest to UVM/Fletcher Allen Health Care. The UVM School of Medicine works directly with Mansfield Orthopaedics in setting students up for the program.
Mansfield Orthopaedics creates a compassionate and efficient system of care, providing comprehensive orthopedic evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation. The practice features two board certified orthopedic surgeons: Bryan Huber, MD and Eric Mullins, MD; with sports medicine specialist Richard James, MD. Services provided include Joint Replacement; Arthritis Care; Arthroscopic Surgery; Hand, Ankle and Foot Surgery; Sports Medicine and Fracture and Trauma Care. In addition to providing surgical consultation and post-surgical care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, aquatic therapy and athletic training care are offered in collaboration with Copley Hospital’s Rehabilitation Services. Mansfield Orthopaedics has clinics in Morrisville and Newport.
